The Catalyst Club was a self-organised, extracurricular programme, initiated as part of the PhD research of Frederiek Bennema, at the beginning of the academic year 2018-2019. The club was maintained and co-constructed by a diverse group of people: students, alumni, tutors, and various participants from a range of disciplines.
A small group gathered weekly, mostly in the main hall of Academy Minerva,
where they found a table and a few chairs to sit around.
Each time the formation was slightly different. The programme comprised of an interactive blend of meetings: reading group sessions, meet & greet sessions with invited guests, and action labs in which we developed an exercises or intervention.
The meetings revolved around issues that mattered to the participants: education but also participation, fluidity, impact of technology, communication, connecting with others or being disconnected.
Agency was spread equally among the participants due to the open, independent, and non-judgemental character of the club; it generated spaces to breathe as one of the founding members of the club described it.
