Huiskamercafé Westerwijtwerd

Description

From February until June 2017, five students (fine art, art education and design), explored Westerwijtwerd (ca. 110 inhabitants) while talking, drawing, photographing. With the Huiskamercafe (living room cafe) as their base of operations, they developed a role in this charming village through their artistic practice.

The students created different dialogues
with both the social and physical environment.

These dialogues evolved into new perspectives on life in this small village northeast of Groningen, and on the ways in which the students contributed through art.

Everything came together at the final presentation in the Huiskamercafe. Residents of Westerwijtwerd were invited to celebrate the results of the working period with old Dutch games and snacks. The various projects were shown and discussed in this relaxed atmosphere. For example, the result of a photography project could be viewed and discussed.

A “go fish” card game developed with Westerwijtwerders, was discussed, and played to open-up perspectives on death and mourning. Also, portraits were drawn, and postcards illustrated on request and sent with a wish to someone in the village.
